Workshop Overview

"Technology and Formations of Power"

Scholars in STS have recently given new vitality to technology studies, illustrating some of the deep and complex ways that technical systems and techniques are intertwined with human lives, imagination, the natural world, and political regimes. This workshop provides an opportunity to discuss new work by leading scholars of politics and technology.

While it used to be radical simply to argue that technology has politics, that is no longer the case.  Now the key questions involve the details of this intersection: how does technology enter into and shape constellations of power by mediating social relations, defining military powers, giving emotional force to religion, shaping the landscape, and channeling communication? Technology and technique, things and forms of life, the built environment as a site of technical and political intervention, and the relation of technology to affect are among the topics that will be addressed.

The conference will focus on these issues, organizing the discussion around three themes: government, govermentality; arts of technology; and technologies and rationalities. Each theme points to a particular type of intersection between technology and power, and leads us to analyze the ways in which technology is embedded in modern formations of power.
