Instructions for Sketch Mapping Exercise
The purpose of this exercise is to produce a usable sketch map of a small
land area by pacing distances, noting features, and developing a usable
key. You will then use these data to create a computer map, using a
simple draw-and-paint program.
On Wednesday, we measured individual paces and worked in teams of two to
pace off and make observations of the area due East of the Communication
building.
To complete the project, you will transfer your data and notes to a
computerized map that will include:
* The sketch map. The map will not be to scale, but will reflect an
approximate scale.
* A title
* Map authorship (your name and the name of anyone who worked with you)
* Any labels that seem appropriate
* A legend, including:
* An approximation of scale (e.g.: 1" equals approximately 5')
* A key to an symbols, colors, or grayscale screens you use (for
instance, you can use symbols to indicate the presence of a feature, such
as a tree, lamppost, utility cover, etc. Or, you might provide an
outline, approximately to scale, and a color.)
A small ruler, held up to the screen, makes an adequate scale for this
exercise.
To complete the assignment, you may print it and submit the printed map
in class, send the map to me as an attachment,
or place it on your website and send me the URL.
